Honey vocals and razor tongue, this is what people went to hear at the Vienna Flex last night. Ursula Rucker was back in town for an intimate club gig.
Accompanied by a guitarist, a drummer and some electronic sounds, Philadelphia's lady of conscience, delivered one and a half hours of compelling, emotional spoken word-performance; well, performance is probably not the right word for what this African American artist, activist and mother of four delivers. She says, "Really it's kind of like just playing back some things over and over again that you may not want to play back over and over again."
With her gentle voice, and her smooth flow of words, Ursula Rucker sang and told stories about war for oil, child abuse, husbands mistreating their wives, people being murdered for no reason other than the colour of their skin. Heavy stuff that left some of the people in the audience irritated - when one of the visitors started shouting insults at Ursula Rucker, the artist briefly walked off the stage, before coming back singing about love and resistance, connecting even more closely with her audience.
Tonight (Tuesday, 21st of March) Ursula Rucker will play at the Ampere Club in Munich.
