really, I do. So when someone (I only wish I could remember who) popped in to the sleepless chat the other day and asked me if this couldn't be a webtip, there was only one thing to say:
oh yeah
There are only three animations online, but they are really quite good. One is a MIKA short, so fans of the band have one more reason to check this site out.
My only problem with the site is that there isn't enough information about the people who made the shorts. Tell me more.
If it's networkable, I have it funked. The old cliché of surfers sitting in front of their computers in their underwear just doesn't cut it. Gimme a melange and people watching instead.
When I went back home to visit last year. All of my favorite cafe's had free wireless internet access. I could hang about all day, waiting for unsuspecting friends to stop by while amusing myself with useless information.
Even better was the freenet that someone had set up in the apartment building where I was staying. Have you ever tried to organize a short term broadband account in a city you don't live in? Even the free dial up accounts have died out in the midwest, which meant that freenets were my only chance for a connection. Besides, the for pay providers just don't seem to be able to get there thing up and running, and their rates are absolutely outrageous. I have seen some that want as much for wlan access as they do for gprs. Prices of 1.50 Euro per MB? That's a very bad joke.
There are free nets in Austria though. You just have to find them. Or make them.
If you want to find them, then this collection of locations should be a major help.
If you want to help build out a freenet, then check out the funke feuer project. They are trying to create a vienna wide wireless network. This is a project that needs to be supported. Well, I want to support it anyway. Being able to work anywhere other than an office is just too tempting.
July 15th: I'm a Spießer.
I would really like to have a little place of my own, with a garden, lofty rooms, loads of space and somewhere to swim.
It would be even better if it was uneinsehbar, completely self sufficient and yet still situated in a community environment.
Since I haven't been able to find any affordable abandoned factories within communiting distance of Vienna, I have been looking into some other alternatives.
The one that tickles my fancy most (other than a yurt) is the earthship.
Built from eathpacked tires, old cans, bottles and adobe, it is supposed to provide the foundation for a completely self sufficient living device.
... a sporty, fast, styling form of personal transportation that doesn't rely on dead dinosaurs and has enough room for me AND some luggage. I want all of the super funky vehicles I always saw in the movies I loved as a kid, I want a personal spacecraft and a transporter. I already have the communicator and communication toys, now just give me my mobility dammit!
Anyway, as I was looking for these things, I came across this site. Sportscars that get 168mpg, electric choppers and personal submarines. Me wants. If only I wasn't all thumbs (and could figure out how to actually get the things licensed for road use here).
Check out the VW camper. The photo of the happy camperin is brilliant....
... has had quite a life. He has played in or with some of the most amazing bands, toured the world multiple times, been an integral part in the development of American punk, hardcore, and rock in general, and now he is on tour playing bass with the Iggy and the Stooges.
Some of you may recognize his name from the Minutemen. Others might know him from Firehose, and still others (though most likely not as many) might know him from his 2 bass project Dos. Of course, if you don't recognize any of those bands, maybe you have heard of Porno For Pyros, or J. Masics and the Fog, or ...
Well, let's put it this way, the mans bio reads like a who's who in underground and alt rock between the seventies and now.
So what's with the Van? Well, Mike and the Minutemen pretty much pioneered the idea of no budget touring together with Black Flag back in the day. The 2 bands toured relentlessly across the states, sharing a band, gigs, and crash pads.
Anyway, this man has a homepage including tourdiaries, loads of photos, and even more charm. If you are into music history, like any of the bands mentioned above, or just want some stories to job your memories of days gone by, the site is worth a visit.
