The monochrom kiddies
are up to no good again. This time they have taken the circus to San Franciso, where they are holding a conference about sex, porn and technology. There will be performances, installations, and lots and lots of
speakers. And maybe a live stream.

But, until I find out whether or not that is going to be running, I thought you might like to check out some of the photos of the things that are going on. On flickr.

And to find out more about the event, go here.

Berkley
Is one of those colleges certain types of kids dream about.

I would have loved to study there, but it just wasn't realistic. Being broke can make some things very difficult.

But UC Berkley is also one of those schools that does things differently. They have been offering video and audio casts for quite some time, playing around with different methods of distribution, formats and sites.

Now they are offering their course on YouTube. That's actually a step up from what they were offering before on iTunes, because it really allows anyone anywhere (with internet access and a computer) to be able to listen to attend some world class lectures. Looks like I'm finally going back to school ...

E-Learning...
I'm really almost ready to give up on seeing be anything really useful come of e-larning.

I want to see teachers sharing their prep, their lesson pans, their ideas, their experience. Ordinary people sharing their knowledge or learning from the sweat of others. I want to see some potential delivered.

And maybe, just maybe, life will be Better.

The web
Is a brilliant thing for food freaks. It's like having access to everyone's grandmothers recipe collections. It's even better actually, because now you can get the recipe AND order the ingredients.

I love skimming for recipes. Every birthday in my neck of the woods is preceded by a mad surfing session where I stack up a load of bookmarks for whatever super sweet birthday extravagance I think my victim might appreciate.

And it usually turns out okay. I'm no Jamie Oliver, and my boxers and socks will be staying right where they are, thank you very much. But sometimes a shopping list and description aren't enough to get you to the end. Sometimes, technique really is important.

I assume that's what the people behind Cookshow were thinking. I really doubt they were just sitting around thinking of the best way to combine two major internet memes with a slowly waning television meme.

The site is really like a web2.0 Tv mashup, letting anyone and their butler become the next scantily clad kitchen guru. It's all about the food. Read about it, watch the video, and then maybe even cook it. Or maybe just buy the t-shirt...

Okay
You're probably fed up with iPhone stuff by now. That's good. Go with it.

Get it out of your system.

And then let me tell you why the whole iPhone hype is good.

It's going to be the catalyst for bringing mobile computing to the masses. Even if no one ever buys another iPhone, the genie is out of the bottle. People have been exposed to an idea of mobile network access that was previously only the realm of wap geeks and gadgetheads. And as a Wap hater and dedicated gadget freak, I can tell you that it wasn't a pretty place.

The mobile web has been the ugly sibling of our current broadband world ever since the first WAP devices hit the market. Very few people take mobile devices into account while designing their sites, and the ones that do could have just as well have forgotten it. The browsers just weren't capable of anything useful in a graphics laden world.

That has changed, and peoples expectations are going to quickly make the current mobile web look as quant as your aunts geocities homepage would in todays internet.

In other words, it's about time people start talking about designing for handheld devices. So here's a conversation starter:

You might have noticed
There has been a lot of news about a new cell phone.

It's that new touchy feely device put out by the kiddies in Cupertino. The iPhone. People were anxiously awaiting the arrival, the hacking and the eventual unlocking of the most hyped phone in history. It's been a rather entertaining bit of tech theater.

Unless you were one of the silly people who hacked it and then upgraded to the most recent firmware. Then you probably found it frightening and annoying as your expensive bit of kit was rendered useless. It was enough to cause fanbois to foam at the mouth, and many people have been asking themselves if the former rebels of the IT biz have slowly been tending toward the dark side.

And that's the idea behind a funny poster at the Joy of tech comic combining the classic Star Wars poster with elements of the iPhone saga. If you're a genX star wars fan and gadget head, you'll probably find it quite amusing.

If you're not, be thankful.
