When I was a kid
I used to dream of working my way around the world on cargo freighters. That didn't work out too well, but I find myself dreaming of taking the slow boat home every time I contemplate getting on a plane for the States.

For people willing to pay for the luxury of a cargo ship, there are some pretty decent alternatives to the usual customer abuse we have all become accustomed to. It takes a bit longer, you aren't squeezed into a seat between two other people you didn't want to know, and you'll be able to get back to actually enjoying the travel part of travelling.

If you want to find out the hows and wheres, then this article might just be for you:

So you wanna be like the cool kids?
Well, that means you have to act like a fool and talk like a pirate today.

Try it. It's fun.

And if yu don't trust your knowledge of english pirate cliches to help you sail through the day, you can always fall back on a handy little resource for those who wish to talk like a german pirate. As an extra special bonus you can find some lyrics to pirate songs, and you can learn a little bit about a famous German pirate. In english.

Textfiles.com
was a webtip ages and ages ago. Which is sort of fitting since it's subject matter is even older.

It's sort of a museum of early online culture. BBS's to be more specific. Those of you old enough to remember 300 baud modems will probably get all teary eyed sifting throough the assive collection of text files served up on the site. those of you too young to even know what a modem sounds like might still enjoy some of the written histories and memoirs of people invoved in the scene back in the day.

Those of you who have been paying attention migh also have noticed that Jason Scott, the man behind Textfiles is going to be speaking tonight in the metalab. You can find out more about it here: http://www.paraflows.at/index.php?id=104#c153

And to enjoy some ancient history, you an go here:

Elections
always bring out the cynic in me.

It's hard enough as it is not to think that most of the world is a well packaged deception, full of sound and fury signifiying blah blah blah.

And as we know from sites like They Rule! there are one or two others out there who think something funny might be going on.

Anakron is a perfect site for those who are convinced our corporate overlords are in control, and who suspect the revolution wont be televised, but that it will be commercialized.

Those of you who are more of into the old school idea of feudal structure, blood dynasties, and lots and lots of sadistic tweakers will probably enjoy the twisted vision presented in the first chapter of "Caligula for President: Better American Living Through Tyranny".

As a kid
the world was a pretty scary place. There were critters under my bed waiting to eat me, the cellar was filled with vampires and various other undead things, and I was pretty darn sure we would all be driving flying cars and hanging out with aliens by the time I was thirty.

As I got older, most of those fears eventually gave way to a solid base of experience that made it pretty clear I wasn't going to be devoured by unnamed beasties. I'm still sort of hoping for the flying car thing, but I won't be holding my breath.

So it's pretty exciting when you read that scientists found something with the Hubble Telescope that they couldn't identify. A big bright dot that suddenly appeared, became brighter and then disappeared again. Something that didn't fit into any of the neat little descriptions they have for all of the other dots they were used to looking at.

The kid in me desperately hopes that it's something really cool, like the footprint of a massive alien spacecraft powering up for a jump into hyperspace. The adult in me assumes it is probably just a bit of cosmic dust on the mirror.

The Dude
is celebrating his tenth anniversary this year. Well, loads of people around the planet are celebrating it for him anyway.

The Big Lebowski is one of those films that have truly become cult, inspiring parties, podcasts and even the odd philosophy of life or two. Reason enough for David Haglund to take another look at the film.
One that's rather entertaining to read, and might just make it worth your while to watch the film again (if you are one of those who haven't alread seen it a couple of hundred times).

One thing that may surprise you, is that his article doesn't focus on the The Dude at all. It's about his friend Walter instead. Becaus Mr. Haglund is convinced Walter is a Neocon.

And feel free to post random quotes from the film in the comments. It's the next best thing to being there.
