Abortion Rights - The Right to Make Your Own Choice
30 years ago this week the United States Supreme Court handed down a landmark verdict in its Roe Vs. Wade decision. The Court told American women that the right to decide to terminate an unwanted pregnancy was their constitutional right. In the months that followed 75 countries around the world took steps to liberalize abortion in their countries. The Austrian law granting women abortion on demand up to the 3rd month of pregnancy went into effect January 1st, 1975.
Reality Check, Saturday January 25th, looks at Abortion then and now, at the pro life vs the pro choice movements which have so divided the United States and the fear of generations of women who've only lived with legalized abortion that pro-abstinence President George W. Bush will appoint new judges to the Supreme Court who would change the law. A Reality Check on Europe too where abortion is still illegal in Ireland and Poland in an interview with the director of the International Planned Parenthood Foundation, Steven Sinding. Nurse, family planning adviser and social worker Leila Akinyemi from the General Public Hospital in Korneuburg describes the situation of Austrian women: the laws, the availability and lack of information about pregnancy termination as well as the choice of methods possible. Korneuburg is currently the only hospital in Austria that offers non-surgical pregnancy terminations with mifegyne. Nurse Akinyemi has advised women for the past 11 years and talks about the counselling process on Saturday's 'Abortion Rights' Reality Check.
