One man's guru is another person's mentor... the idea that an experienced, successful professional or older person counsels and guides someone younger through life and a career dates way, way back. But, in America alone it's estimated that about 2.5 million young people have mentors. That's compared to about 1/2 million back in 1990.
All around the world, mentoring is on the rise. The University of Vienna started a mentoring program for women in science 3 years ago. Other universities and schools have followed. The corporate world got involved early on... getting its volunteer professionals involved with e-mentoring on a weekly basis. The idea behind e-mentoring being anyone, anytime, anywhere.
Tune into this Saturday's Reality Check with Steve Crilley to find out how mentoring has worked in the states (the National Mentoring Partnership and mentoring critic Jean Rhodes, author of 'STAND BY ME: THE RISKS AND REWARDS OF MENTORING TODAY'S YOUTH'). Meet University of Vienna mentor Dr. Renee Schröder and her mentee Claudia Jonak. Find out about how corporate mentoring programs work in Austria and around the world as used by Hewlett Packard and SAP Austria.
You too can be a mentor, or even a mentee.
