At his best, Horst Jankowski is a strange blend of Ray Conniff's vocal arrangements, Bert Kaempfert's Teutonic hooks, and Esquivel's playfulness. Trained as a classical concert pianist at the Berlin Music Conservatory, Jankowski switched to jazz early on, leading a small combo in German clubs. He conducted the pit band that accompanied singer Caterina Valente, then moved into writing and performing production music for a German version of Muzak. As Herr Jankowski rounded the bend from the sixties to the seventies, he indulged his jazz tendencies more and more (and faded from American airwaves). He released several albums that featured jazzy vocal choral versions of hits like "Light My Fire".
Bobby Womack / Everything's Gonna Be Alright (1975)
From Bobby's 1975's masterpiece album "Safety Zone", here the great singer/songwriter experiments with Norman Withfield-like funky psycho-soul, just as the Temptations, The Undisputed Truth and Curtis Mayfield were doing at this time.
Luiz Henrique / Minha Lagoa (1967)
Brazilian composer and singer Luiz Henrique recorded in the 1960s a couple of sweet, but sometimes goofy, albums well after the first flush of Braz-Jazz crossovers. Even though this song was recorded under the auspices of Verve, it's a pretty straightforward set of bossa flavored acoustic troubadouring, with sung in English with the same guilelessly awkward accent that Caetano Veloso sometimes employs.
Creative Source / Corazon (1974)
Early 70's funk / soul group Creative Source, Formed 1972, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., consisted of:Barbara Berryman, Barbara Lewis, Don Wyatt, Steve Ranagan and Celeste Rose. Initially they recorded for the Sussex label where their albums included the Michael Stokes-produced 'Creative Source' (1973) and 'Migration' (1974), including the outstanding cover version of Carole King's "Corazon".

Cymande / Pon De Dungle (1974)
Like Jimi Hendrix, the eight members of Cymande were all phenomenally adept self-taught musicians. And also like Hendrix, they were masters at synthesizing funk, soul, blues, and psychedelic sounds, creating a music that resists any convenient labeling. They could funk on a reggae groove, put a heavy dose of soul into a psychedelic jam, and lay down some bluesy riffs around a Caribbean spiced vocal. Cymande's members came from Guyana, Jamaica, and St.Vincent, and they imported a strong island vibe into their cosmic sound. The group only released three albums between 1972 and 1975. "Pon de Dungle" is definitive one of their very best songs.

Und da fiel es uns plötzlich wie Schuppen von den Augen: Rubbeln! Waschen! Körper! Liebessäfte! Im Kulturgut "Waschlappen" vereint sich diese sinnlichste Mischkulanz auf gerade mal 18x13 Zentimeter! Grundgütiger - der Waschlappen ist doch das geilste Fetzchen Stoff, das menschlicher Erfindergeist je schuf! Wertvoller als das Leichentuch Christi, sündiger als das Bettlaken von Uschi Glas und bakteriengesättigter als eine Latrine im öffentlichen Raum. Der Himmel auf Erden: er ist aus Frottée!
