The Rocket Network
Bernie Taupin & Elton John - two musicians - two continents - with an ocean between them, so how did their collaboration work?
A lot of faxing of sheet music, singing down the phone etc. That was the 70s for you! Things have got a little easier in the shareware world of the new milenium.
Now if you want to team up with producers in New York, London or Sydney (or Shanghai for that matter), the Rocket Network may just be the answer.
The Rocket Network, means artists, producers, engineers and film producers can use a computer/internet production system to create, edit, or listen to audio, enabling audio collaboration from anywhere in the world. Rocket Network works as a file-transfer system, creating a virtual studio that can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection. Two British musicians came up with the idea in the early 90s - Will Henshall, who at the time was in the band Londonbeat and Tim Bran who was in Dreadzone. Though they wanted to work together they found they were never in the same place at the same time (shades of Elton & Bernie here!) and so they came up with the Rocket Network.

To use the system, you need to download a free program from the Rocket Network website. This works with audio software like ProTools and Steinberg Cubase.
Anyone can use the public sessions in Rocket Network for free. But if you want to use it as a serious professional tool, you need to pay a subscription.
Top acts such as Sheryl Crow have used the system. Her "Kiss That Girl" track for the soundtrack to the movie Bridget Jones's Diary was mixed via the Rocket Network. At the time, the track was being mixed in London, Sheryl Crow was in Hawaii and the producer was in Oregon. But using the Rocket Network, she could ask for last minute changes and have the final product delivered via the internet to both the record label and the London film company all in good time.
Tim Bran from the Rocket Network told Steve Crilley about the whole process in Friday's Reality Check at 12 midday.
And if you want to try the system yourself, here's the link: www.rocketnetwork.com

And just in case your ears aren't close to a radio, here's Steve's interview with Tim Bran from the Rocket Network...

23h00 Florian Lindinger (Satellitenstadt.com/ Europe) in the mix: "Music in Exil" (playlist folgt)

Hast Du das Gefühl, Du hast was versäumt? Schau mal!
Letze Chance! Tapes scharf machen!
