Unicorns, cats and Natalie Portman: The best music videos of 2008.
Best last-minute Christmas video:
Low - "Santa's Coming Over"
Be careful, he sees you when you're sleeping...
Best cameo appearance by a now ex-girlfriend:
Devendra Banhart - "Carmensita"
Is putting your girlfriend in your music video the musical equivalent of getting her name tattooed? In this case, Devendra's album "Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon" flopped big time and Natalie Portman's flying solo these days ... maybe she didn't like being a princess that much after all.
Best video that cost $5 to make:
MGMT - "Time to Pretend"
The best part is him riding on that cat, isn't it? Mr. Fuchs turned me on to this way back at the beginning of the year and I was mightily intrigued - neon shorts, tribal imagery and songs about choking on vomit, you say? Sign me up. Watched this video on repeat, then marvelled at the fact that it was both one of the greatest and one of the most atrocious works of art I had ever seen.
Best artsy video that no one got but everyone loved:
Santogold - "LES artistes"
Best music video expressing latent sexual chemistry between band members by showing them beating each other up:
Kills - "Last Days of Magic"
Cutest music video that's actually kind of creepy
Jamie Lidell - "Another Day" & "Feel Good"
Mr. Jim gave us a double whammy of creepy/cute this year. In "Another Day", he keeps finding cute ladies with missing organs that want to dance with him. Luckily, he's got spares in his suitcase...and in "Feel Good", well, the unicorn dies.
Creepiest music video that's acutally kind of cute:
Death Cab for Cutie - "I will Possess Your Heart"
Okay, so it's 8 minutes about a stalker...or about a girl traveling the corners of the world in search of true love?
For some reason, the music video is no longer available anywhere. Except here.
Best demonstration of continuous jumping and random lip-synching
Goldfrapp - "Happiness"
A continous shot, an endless street, somehow this all reminds me of "Penny Lane".
Best Wes Anderson homage
Vampire Weekend - "Oxford Comma"
This was the video that kicked off the entire Small Screen Stories series. Because I saw it and could not stop talking about it. It still makes me very happy and makes me wish that Wes Anderson would get on it already and make a new film!
Best use of eyeliner and bunnies:
I was hooked on the video before I got hooked on the song. Great ominous desert imagery, and once again a study of the subtle evil of those little bunny-wunnies. Someone's been brushing up on their Lynch...And to be a total girl, I love their outfits. There, I admit it.
Best use of Neusiedlersee and electro boats:
Tanz Baby - "Ich bin traurig"
I have to say, this video had me at "hello". All I did this summer was ride around on a little electro boot through the waters of the old Danube. How great to see that Tanz Baby captured that feeling on tape and released it in the fall - albeit David's boating around Neusiedlersee, but that's my goal for next year anyway. Maybe we'll make a video of that. Stay tuned, as they say in the biz.
